Taiwan Taipei - Balaka Highway (巴拉卡公路)

Description: About 16km flat, then comes 15km of
continous uphill. Once at DaTun Nature Park
(大屯自然公園), it is all the way downslope from YangJin
Highway till JianTan MRT Station.
Tags: Get to pass by GuanDu Temple (関渡宮), a
popular tourist destination. Once into
BeiXinZhuang (北新莊), you are able to see Balaka
Mountain and DaTun Mountain with clouds crowding
at its peak (and you tell yourself - that is where i am
heading). During May (Spring) period, can get to
see Sakura blossom along the way.
Taiwan Taipei - BeiHaiAn Loop (北海岸)
Start Point: JianTan (劍潭) MRT Station
End Point: JianTan (劍潭) MRT Station
Level of Difficulty: Difficult
Description: From GuGong (故宮), it is uphill all the
way untl FengGuiZui(風櫃嘴), then it is a
comfortable glide down all the way to Wan Li (萬里).
From there, it is mostly flat. Depending the season
you are in, you may find yourself cycling against the
wind direction, making the way back a little bit
tougher than expected.
Tag: This route is perhaps one of the most talked
about routes with any cycling enthusiats living in
Taipei (臺北)or Keelung (基隆). The cycling route
brings about everything a cyclist could hope for,
from the fresh air offered by surrounding vegetation,
to cycle among the fog and clouds near the tip of
FengGuiZui, waterfall, speed thrills when coming
down the mountain, the beautiful Pacific Ocean,
white sands at BaiSaWan (白沙灣), nice coffee and
food along the way. Don’t miss the BaZang (肉粽)at
ShiMen (石門鄉)。
Taiwan Taipei - FengGuiZui (風櫃嘴)
Start Point: JianTan (劍潭) MRT Station
End Point: JianTan (劍潭) MRT Station

Description: Nice flat and urban ride from JianTan
MRT station to GuGong (故宮). From GuGong, it
slopes gentle for another 4.5km to FengLinQiao.
From FengLinQiao (風鈴橋), it is 6.4km of upslope
until FengGuiZui (風櫃嘴)
Tag: One of the short challenging routes that can be
done within 2 hours (To and Fro). The ride along
WaiXuangXi (外雙溪)is very pleasant with the stream
running along the cycling route. FengLinQiao to
FengGuiZui is tough uphill rural ride with some
houses offering kampung chicken for sale. At
FengGuiZui, it can get foggy and cold. Remember
you jacket and headlights.
Taiwan Taipei - ShiDing (石碇)to PingXi
(平溪)and Back

Level of Difficulty: Easy
Description: From ShiDing (石碇), it is kind of flat
with you cycling through a valley. There is a uphill
climb when you are reaching ShiDing Township.
Tag: Along Route 106, this route has now
transformed into the playground for cyclist and
motorbikers as cars would now head for the
national highways. PingXi (平溪)has a nice old
town. On the yearly calendar, PingXi is a place
where there Taiwanese will head for during
YuanXiao (元宵)for its Lanterns (天燈節)Incidentally,
PingXi also has Tea Plantations, perfect for those
who needs caffine after a long ride.
Taiwan Taipei - ShiFen (十份)RuiFang
(瑞芳) GongLiao (貢寮) Loop
Start Point: ShiFen (十份)Township
End Point: ShiFen (十份)Township
Level of Difficulty: Difficult
Description: From Shifen(十份), the start of the
journey is a 4km uphill, after that is a nice glide
down all the way to RuiFang(瑞芳). From RuiFang,
it is bascially coastal road ride with the waves from
the Pacific Ocean on your left. You will passby
several seaside townships. Riding along Highway 2,
you will reach a Farmosa (台朔加油站)Petrol Kiosk
(Junction of Route 102 and Highway 2), turn right
into 102 and it is a nice valley ride back to ShiFen.
Expect a nasty uphill climb closer to ShiFen and
after the climb, you will be greeted by a 1.3km
tunnel. MUST fix your riding lights before you go on
this route. After the tunnel, it is a nice glide back to
ShiFen.
Tag: Nice day trip outing for friends and family.
Around RuiFang Train station is a busting market,
once out of RuiFang and just after you hit HIghway
2, you can see the famous township of JiuFen
(九份)on a slope. The Coastal Road offer lots of
opportunities for a seafood bite. If seafood is not
your cup of tea, then the Fulong Rice Box
(福隆便當)at Fulong train station is one of the most
talked about food in Taipei. Tired? Then hit to
CaoLingGuDao (草嶺古道)(slightly after the Formosa
Petrol Kiosk) for a nap on the grass patch.
Taiwan Taipei - ShiLin (士林)to
KeeLung(基隆) and back
Start Point: JianTan (劍潭) MRT Station
End Point: JianTan (劍潭) MRT Station
Level of Difficulty: Moderate
Description: Flat most of the way, 75% of the route
is along KeeLung River (基隆河). The rest of the
route is on Highway 5 from XiZhi (汐止)to KeeLung
(基隆).
Tag: A favorite breakfast ride, you will passby some
fo the very nice parks in Taipei City along the river.
You will also pass by the famous KeeLung Night
Market. Opposite the KeeLung Train Station, there
are Starbucks & BurgerKing Outlets for you to dine
with a nice Harbour View. If you are too tired to ride
back, an option is to hop onto a train (only if you
ride a foldable)
Taiwan Taipei - ShiLin (士林)to YingGe
(鶯歌)and back

Description: Flat most of the way, the ride is along
the river arteries that spans from Taipei City, Taipei
County and TaoYuan (桃園縣)County.
Tag: YingGe(鶯歌) is well known for its pottery, it is
a perfect ride for those looking for Cultural and the
Arts in Taiwan. There is a well preserved Old Town
where pottery is of abundance. Take a train or drive
there is your intend to do some pottery shopping,
because carrying them back on a bicycle may not
be the most ideal thing to do.
Taiwan Taipei - ShiLin (士林)to Muzha Zoo
(木柵動物園)and back

Description: Flat most of the way, the ride is along
the river arteries that spans within Taipei City.
Tag: At the end point, i.e Muzha Zoo, (木柵動物園)
there is a very bike friendly MacDonalds where you
can park your bike and enjoy the sunshine after
some hard peddling. Becareful though, you can get
a bit too comfortable and the ride back can get
psychologically tough. If you think you have not
burn enough, then around Muzha Zoo, there are
short uphill (~ 7km) rides up the mountain range of
MaoKong (貓空)
Taiwan Taipei - ShiLin (士林)to DanShui
(淡水)and back

Description: Riding on flat ground all the way, the
route is one of the most traveled and popular routes
for all age groups. Can get overcrowded at times.utl
Tag: Near to GuanDu (関渡), there is a swamp where
birdwatchers will gather early in the morning. The
temple at GuanDu is always crowded. There is a
hawker centre like outlet opposite the temple for a
bike and a drink. At DanShui (淡水), it is always
bustling. There is a old market street where lots of
local delicacies are sold. Danshui Starbucks offers
a nice relax spot for a typical weekend cyclist for
chitchat with friends. For those who have a bit more
strength, can always peddle to Fisherman Wharf
(漁人碼頭)approximately 5km away.
Taiwan Taipei - ShiLin (士林)to Ba Li
(八里)and back

Description: Riding on flat ground all the way, the
route is one of the most traveled and popular routes
for all age groups.
Tag: The route splits at GuanDu bridge (関渡橋)from
those traveling to DanShui (淡水). The BaLi
Township (八里鄉)is at the opposite side of the
Danshui. For those who prefers a quieter ride, then
BaLi could be a better choice. Further from BaLi
Township, there is a museum (十三行博物館)popular
with weekend goers.
Taiwan Taipei - 3P Never Give Up
End Point: LengShuiKeng (冷水坑)
Level of Difficulty: Difficult
Description: This is the annual 3P Never Give Up
Event Sponsored by Giant. It is estimated that over
5000 bikes showed up for the event. It is called 3P
because the route will bring you to conquer 3
mountain peaks. P is because the route on the Map
looks like a P shape. The ride starts off with cyclist
going uphill along the YangJin Highway (陽金公路).
16km of continous uphill and you will reach the 1st
rest point (near the tip of YangJin highway). Then it
is followed by a 20km of steep downhill, bike can
clock in excess of 50km/hr. At the base, it is short
ride along the coastal road where one will find that it
is another 16km climb to FengGuiZui (風柜嘴). Glide
downhill (steep decend) around 8km and you will hit
the 3rd rest point. Slightly after the 3rd rest point,
turn right into the YangMingShan National Park
(陽明山國家公園)and one begins a 13.3km climb up to
reach LengShuiKeng (冷水坑).
Tag: Not for the faint hearted, it is a test for the
individual to conquer 3 peaks in one ride.
Camelpak, bananas, chocolate, isotonic sachets,
bring them, you will NEED them. You will be so tired
that you forgot to observe what you saw during your
ride.
Taiwan Taipei - Around SheZi Island
(社子島)
Start Point: JianTan (劍潭) MRT Station
End Point: JianTan (劍潭) MRT Station
Level of Difficulty: Easy
Description: Flat ground ride. SheZi island sits in
between the Keelung River and DanShui River. The
island houses mostly of metal industries, but don't
let this deceive you. It is a nice and quiet ride with
lots of look out points along the rivers.
Tag: The island is on the river delta, and it is at the
tip of 2 rivers merging, perfect place to do a bit of
birdwatching.
